About us

We are a community of Buddhist practitioners based in East Kent. We have local groups which meet every week, in Deal, Canterbury and Margate, with individuals based all over the county. We are part of the wider Triratna Buddhist Community and in the spirit of this community we organise each group in a bottom-up, grass roots fashion. East Kent Buddhists offers centralised guidance and support whilst each of the individual groups manage and steer themselves. If you would like to get in touch or have any questions click below.

Our vision

How we aim to uphold Buddhist practice and values in East Kent

Deepening Sangha in Deal, Canterbury and Margate

We want to support connection and community across East Kent. We hold events, festivals and retreats that bring people together from different locations, offering space to explore a truly Western Buddhism. Everything we do is informed and managed on a basis of spiritual friendship [Kalyana Mitrata]. In this mode we organise ourselves from the bottom up with each Group acting as a self governing entity and East Kent Buddhists as a whole providing a central structure and ethos.

Helping people to deepen their own practice

Our vision is for a dynamic and vibrant context of Buddhist Practice emerging in East Kent. This means supporting people in what ever ways we can to deepen their own Dharma Practice and connections to the Sangha. Beyond our regular drop-ins we encourage people to explore Study, go on retreat and connect with teachers to build friendship and develop a depth of understanding.

Spreading the Dharma

Buddhism is one of the world's oldest living religions, yet in the UK it is still very young. We believe in Sangharakshita's vision of a new Western Buddhism that emerges from the actual land we live in. We aim to support people in exploring and developing their own personal relationship to the Dharma and to the wider Triratna movement: offering classes and courses, supporting Going for Refuge Groups and holding dedicated Women+ and Men+ events.

About the Triratna Buddhist Community

Founded in 1967 by British born Buddhist, Sangharakshita, Triratna is a worldwide community of individuals following the Buddha's teachings. We aim to bring these ancient teachings into the modern world, making them applicable and relevant without losing their timeless qualities. The Dharma is for everyone and so there is no monastic / lay split within our Order. We believe anyone can follow these practices as fully as they wish and we offer pathways for deepening connection, such as becoming a Mitra (Friend) or training for Ordination.
